What Adelaide ground means for your paving
A few local conditions decide how paving should be laid here.
Reactive clay
Much of Adelaide sits on clay that swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries out. Paving laid on a thin or poorly compacted base moves with it. A proper compacted base and edge restraint are what keep pavers flat.
Water and fall
Paving should fall away from the house and must not be laid up over the slab edge or weep holes. Downpipes and surface water need somewhere to go. Our guide to fall and drainage next to the house covers the rules.
Driveway crossovers
The part of the driveway over the footpath and kerb sits on council land, and most Adelaide councils need you to apply before it is built or changed. Worth checking before you lock in a new driveway width.
Sloping blocks
In the foothills and on sloping blocks, a retaining wall is often what makes a flat, usable patio or parking area possible. Walls over about a metre usually need council approval.

Paving in Adelaide — common questions
Do you work across Adelaide, or only around Gawler?
Both. We are based in Gawler and service all of metropolitan Adelaide. The northern suburbs are closest, and we also quote in the CBD, the eastern, western and southern suburbs and the Adelaide Hills. Call and we will tell you straight away if your job fits our schedule.
How much does paving cost in Adelaide?
It depends on the area, the paver, how much digging and base work the ground needs, drainage and access. Our guide to paving cost per square metre in Adelaide explains what moves the price. Quotes are free with no obligation, and Brodie measures up himself.
Pavers or concrete for an Adelaide driveway?
Pavers flex with Adelaide's reactive clay and can be lifted and relaid if a section moves, where concrete tends to crack. Concrete is usually cheaper up front. We compare the two in pavers vs concrete for an Adelaide driveway.
Do I need council approval?
For most paving on your own block, no. Two things to check: a new or changed driveway crossover (the part over the footpath and kerb) usually needs your council's approval, and retaining walls over a certain height need it too. See retaining walls and council approval in SA.
Do you take on small paving jobs?
Yes. Front paths, side access, a small patio, or relaying a section that has sunk are all part of what we do, not just big driveways. If pavers have dropped, our guide to sunken pavers and relaying explains the usual causes.
Do you do pool paving in Adelaide?
Yes. We lay pool surrounds and coping in non-slip pavers, set to fall away from the pool and the house so water drains where it should.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. May Paving is fully licensed and insured under Builder's Licence BL 355972, with over 10 years of hands-on paving and landscaping experience.
